A native of Pakistan, Dr. Ilyas received a combined bachelor of medicine and surgery from Allama Iqbal Medical College and University of Health Sciences in Lahore, Pakistan. He then completed internships in surgery and medicine, and for the next four years, underwent internal medicine training in Pakistan. His experience and qualifications served as the foundation for acquiring licensure privileges and pursuing membership of the Royal College of Physicians in the United Kingdom.

After coming to the United States, Dr. Ilyas worked as a research assistant for the Liver Center at the University of California San Diego before starting his internship and residency in internal medicine at Hurley Medical Center/Michigan State University in Flint. While there, he received the Resident Investigator of the Year award, and also completed his master’s degree in clinical research design and statistical analysis from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Following his residency, Dr. Ilyas served as a research assistant at the University of Michigan’s division of gastroenterology, as well as a hospitalist at Covenant Medical Center in Saginaw. He then completed a fellowship in transplant hepatology and second fellowship in gastroenterology from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

For his research on hepatitis, liver disease, and liver transplant, Dr. Ilyas has been published in many peer-reviewed journals, including the American Journal of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Gastroenterology, Journal of Hepatology, Clinics in Liver Disease, and Gastroenterology Clinics of North America. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, American Association for Study of Liver Diseases, American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Gastroenterology, and Texas Society for Gastroenterology and Endoscopy.

In addition to general gastroenterology, Dr. Ilyas has a special interest in both general and transplant hepatology. He has received specialized training in management of complex liver problems including viral hepatitis, metabolic, genetic and autoimmune liver diseases. He has expertise in management of pre- and post-liver transplant patients. He is fluent in Urdu and joined Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates in 2015.
